Context: Ru and I had just walked back from his kindergarten, and we stepped into the lift in our apartment building. It was one of those hot, bright summer days and we were both a bit sweaty and tired. Yes, the kind of dehydrated tired that makes you want to drink a matka full of water and a fan in your face!
Me: Ru yaar, it is so hot today! I am super thirsty. I need a lot of water. Like…a lot a lot a lot of water.
Ru: (pauses, tilts his head in that thoughtful way he always does and asks innocently) Mumma… maybe we should call the fire engine?
Me: (can’t stop laughing!) What? Ru! No, why?
Ru: Because they have a lot of water!
You: (continue laughing) Oh Ru, no, I do not want that much water. Maybe just enough to drink.
Ru: (nodding with some kind of realization) Ahhhhh! You need little much water. Not lot of water.
You: (laughing again!) (The lift dings softly as we reach our floor so I hurriedly wrap up the conversation as we step out) Yes, little much water !
As usual, Ru in his innocent logic of “little much” reminds us that sometimes, in our thirst for relief, for peace, for meaning we ask for a lot. But maybe what we truly need is just a little much…just enough to keep going! And anyhow, solutions in life may not always be grand or for that matter even immediate…sometimes a small little much voice is enough to help you realise water are you saying, or, for that matter, what are you doing in life! haha!
Amazing thought process, Jayana :)! Marvellously crafted with beautiful words 🙂
